In September of xxxx, Happy Trails assisted in taking 240 white leghorn hens from a rescue originally done in California. A laying factory had gone bankrupt and left thousands of hens to die. People came in to gas the remaining hens that had survived this long to dispose of them. After days with no food or water, rescues were allowed to go in and remove as many as they could. They were taken to a sanctuary in California, then shipped to other sanctuaries around the country who offered their help with these hens. Some flew on a plane to Farm Sanctuary in New York. Happy Trails drove through the night to load up 240 of these girls to take back with us. They were skinny and ragged looking. Their big combs flopped over and were pale due to malnutrition. They got their first taste of freedom at Happy Trails where they were allowed to roam and have as much food and water as they wanted. Many have found homes already, 90 of them went home the day they arrived! It has been a pleasure to watch these girls recover and learn how to be a chicken again. They have gained weight and molted out their tattered feathers to reveal gorgeous white ones. They are so sweet and appreciate life for what it is. They love nothing more than pecking around for bugs or taking a dust bath. About 35 of these girls remain at Happy Trails and are waiting for their forever home! Their adoption fee is $10 each.
